A policy lab is a research and innovation hub — an academic and research-based platform where experts, students, and partners collaboratively design, test, and evaluate public policies. By combining academic expertise, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement, the lab produces evidence-based and practical solutions to societal challenges.

It provides hands-on learning for students, fosters collaboration with stakeholders and communities, and ensures that policy recommendations are both effective and scalable. The IPS Policy Lab at UBD is uniquely positioned to serve as a regional hub for governance innovation, connecting Brunei's national policy priorities with broader ASEAN and global frameworks.

Policy Lab offers tailored consultancy and advisory services through an expanded service model. Our team of senior researchers and policy experts provides bespoke analysis, policy audits, strategic planning facilitation, and advisory support to government ministries, statutory bodies, and private sector organisations in Brunei and across the region.

The IPS Policy Lab Workshop, held on September 1, 2025, was designed as a full-day interactive session aimed at introducing university students to evidence-based policy making in the AI era. Focused on ASEAN-specific challenges, the workshop incorporated expert lectures, tool demonstrations, and facilitated group activities to build foundational skills in policy formulation.

Key themes included AI Usage (Ethics & Tools) in Academic Settings, Mental Health & Wellbeing Among University Students, and Challenges & Opportunities in Social Media Usage. The workshop drew on real-world case studies and AI-driven tools such as Sentiment Analysis to ensure evidence-informed outputs.
